Travel Blog: India

From Catholicism to Hinduism, St. Michael & Company traveled to India.  India is diverse in food, language, religion, arts, and traditions.

We visited the cities of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Varanasi.  Our trip can be described as a pilgrimage of healing– profound, colorful, in-depth with meditation – Namaste- peace.

Indian people are very religious.  You will find temples in every corner—with flower garlands and incense.

On our trip to Agra, we visited a farming community.   We came across groups of women who were on pilgrimage.  These women came from different towns and walked for days.  Their pilgrimage is believed to be a selfless and purposeful meditative journey. They believe it is a  form of selfless sacrifice and part of their self-discovery and actualization of their life and faith.

Varanasi is a very special place for Hinduism.  It is a holy place for prayer, rituals, and tradition in the Indian Culture.  According to history, Varanasi came from the words ‘Kashi” and ‘Kasha,” which means brightness. Kashi is known to be the ‘original ground’ created by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. During ancient times, Aryans were the first settlers in the Ganges valley, and therefore, Varanasi became the center of the Aryan religion and philosophy.  History tells us that Varanasi became the center of commerce and trade through spices, muslin, silk fabrics, ivory works, perfumery, and sculptures.

Our friend and tour guide Dharam Rajpal brought us to the evening prayer ceremony. It was quite solemn, and we placed floating flowers and candles in the Ganges River as a ritual of sending off your deceased loved one to the Ganges River.   The next day we woke at dawn and had a boat ride to witness the tranquil river and ascent of the sun rising- as a sign of a new day – a new dawn.  A shaman said prayers and blessings as the sun was rising.

Our lives are blessed in many ways, and most of the time, we don’t realize it.  We are blessed to have visited an orphanage. Thanks to Fr. Abni, his catholic charity work has impacted the lives of many orphans, taking care of these children abandoned by their parents.

A trip to Taj Mahal is majestic – its Indian architecture shows great analytical skills, creativity and attention to detail.  Jaipur, the Pink City is the largest city in the state of Rajasthan, another showcase of artistic Indian culture of spices, food, silks, silver works, art and carpets.

Indian hospitality is full of life and spices.  Blessed to have met a couple.  They hosted a dinner and gave us a cooking class of Indian cuisine.  #masala #spiceoflife
