Bulgaria’s Finest Rose Oil
In June, we visited Bulgaria to attend the Festival of the Roses and, most importantly, to learn and witness the distillation of Rose oil, particularly the home of the Damask rose (Rosa Damascena). As one of the most exclusive and expensive essential oils in the world, the rose is a source of pride and treasure for Bulgaria. Its global recognition of the Damask Rose for high-quality rose oil production and aromatic properties makes it a symbol of Bulgarian heritage and craftsmanship.
In 2022, Damascus Rose Cultivation and Traditions in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria was nominated for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and ‘Champions of the Earth’ award, the UN’s highest environmental honor. The ‘Champions of the Earth’ award is given to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the protection and preservation of the environment. This nomination further solidifies Bulgaria’s global recognition for its rose cultivation and traditions. In September 2014, the European Commission approved Bulgarian rose oil as a new Protected Geographical Indication.
Apart from its fragrance, the Damask rose is used in Bulgarian cuisine. Rose water from these blossoms adds a delicate floral note to pastries, drinks, and desserts.
Rose Oil Distillation.
Worldwide perfumers and skincare craftsmen hailed Bulgaria’s rose for its laborious technique of steam distillation. This process involves carefully heating the rose petals to release their essence, which is then condensed into a liquid form. This careful process preserves the delicate nature, exquisite scents, and therapeutic benefits of the rose petals, making Bulgaria’s rose oil highly sought after in the industry. The best time to pick the rose blossoms is from 5 am – 12:00 noon before the dew evaporates. The dilution ratio of 1 to 4 with water and heated in distillation chambers. The amount of rose petals needed to make one liter of rose oil is 3,500 kg.
Festival of the ROSE
Close to its harvest season is the celebration of the Festival of the Rose. This festival plays a significant role in preserving and promoting the rich culture of the Damask Rose and the centuries-old rose-cultivating traditions of Kazanlak and other rose-growing towns. Experience the vibrant Rose Festival, which honors these traditions through dances, music, and a craft fair.
