Petra located at Aman in Jordan is known as the center of ancient trade routes between Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea over 2000 years ago. It was capital city for trade of the powerful and wealthy during the ancient times. It was a major destination of foreign trades of the most exotic essential oils, resins, spices and goods from India, Arabia, and Egypt.
As history books tell the tales of civilization, Arabian nomads called the Nabataeans who were skilled traders moved from place to place herding camels, sheep, and goats and gained the important trades routes for their spices and incense from the Mediterranean regions.. The Nabataeans created one of the most sophisticated hydraulic system connected canals, cisterns, springs, and fountains throughout the city to survive in the desert.
During the prosperous era of the Nabataean empire, it included regions of known today as Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Syria, and northwestern Saudi Arabia. Trade brought more than wealth and exotic goods to Petra.
As traders from around the world passed though Petra, they brought new ideas and culture from places like Egypt, China, and Greece. Petra became more than a center of trade—it was also a cultural center of the ancient world.
Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its elaborative and spectacular architecture of ancient tombs, monuments, and houses that were carved into the sandstone cliffs and chiseled by hand out of the rose-red rocks, then covered with stucco and painted bright colors.
